The Witching Hour👻
Okay, no witches, but who frequently wakes up between 1-3 AM?
I call this the “liver hour” which in Chinese Medicine is a 2-hour window of time located on the Chinese Meridian Clock which correlates with the liver physically and energetically.
If you consistently wake between 1-3 AM, your liver is trying to communicate with you whether it be the emotional, physical, and digestive. The liver has over 500 jobs. I remember having this many jobs in college! Everything we consume must be shuttled to our liver to be broken down into pieces and parts to be utilized in the body.
Here are a few examples of the liver’s role in our health:
- Filters blood coming from the digestive tract.
- Metabolizes drugs, toxins, chemicals.
- Metabolizes fats, proteins, carbohydrates.
- Production of cholesterol: essential for healthy hormones, brain, and skin.
Liver imbalances based on Chinese medicine may include:
Headaches, migraines, allergies, chronic indigestion, PMS, Anger, jealousy, competition, resentment, frustration, impatience
If you are waking during the “witching hour” take into consideration the following:
- Did you eat increased carbohydrates at dinner (sugar, bread, pasta, wine, etc..), processed foods, out at a restaurant.
- How were your emotions the day before or that week?
- Are you constipated?
How do I support a healthy liver?
- Remove processed foods (hydrogenated oils), poor quality fats.
- Drink spring water.
- Remove excess sugar, such as bread and pasta.
- ADD Bitter foods; arugula, kale, radishes, broccoli, cabbage, garlic, chard, turnips, turmeric, basil, cumin, dill, ginger, rosemary, mint.
Remember, there is no shortcut to health – small changes over time= long term wellness!
